Bryan Singer, returning to the Marvel mutant franchise that he kick-started, skillfully meshes its two disparate story strands, crafting an ambitious time-spanning tale that brings together key players from the original X-Men trilogy and their younger counterparts from First Class. In the end, Singer succeeds in infusing a kind of popcorn blockbuster quality to a drama rich in emotion. Blessed with a solid cast, he gives us characters we actually care for. Im going with three-and-a-half out of five for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

It is also a film that tries on a unique, ambitious approach: it crams so, so much plot into its two-hour running time that there isnt room to get bored — or room even for the obligatory Stan Lee cameo. What Bryan Singer has wisely created here is a massively eventful film, a film where every fifth minute brings a fresh plotpoint, introduces an important character, makes a self-referential dig… There are inconsistencies, sure, but the film kicks off in the middle of the action and the narrative never lets up — its one big colourful highlight reel.

Bryan Singer, who launched the X-Men franchise 14 years ago, returns with a bang – X-Men: Days of Future Past is ambitious, big screen entertainment with wit, depth and verve. Thankfully Singer keeps the mayhem and climactic digital destruction in check and inserts enough emotional resonance to keep us invested. Does it all make sense? Im not entirely sure but Im happy to sacrifice narrative coherence for pure adrenalin. Besides, its such a pleasure to see so many terrific actors working off each other. Im going with three and a half stars.

For a complex plot with so many characters, the movie is surprisingly easy to follow because of the cogent and clever distinctions made between front-line and secondary plots and characters. And though there’s no shortage of fantastic special effects, the film isn’t in the least bit overbearing. While it assumes viewer familiarity with all the characters, *Days of Future Past* does manage the improbable task of combining almost everything that we love about the X-Men series, in one place.

All in all, the film is a great step in the right direction. If the teaser shown in the end credits is any indication, the franchise is far from over but with this film as a base, there’s hope for the X-Men yet. The bold move of combining the cast of the original film series with that of First Class seems to have paid of well, making this easily the best X-Men film to date, even better than X-2: X-Men United

Ah, finally. A great X Men movie. It took them long enough. First Class was fun, but it wasnt great. Days of the Future Past is great. I think its the best X Men movie Ive seen. It brings back the nostalgia of X1 and the magic of X2, and makes you forget about every other movie made in the canon. I could have awarded this movie four stars, I really wanted to. But I have to subtract half a star for one big reason. The 3D. Its awful.

Catch this one because you have waited for some good ol fan-fic that does not try too hard to elucidate on the good over evil aspect. A neat take on the rising divides between the mutants and the people and the institution of the State biting into the decision making. This is an applicable storyline that definitely travels beyond fiction. So the kid can watch this for the respect to fandom paying some homage to Storm who is highly under portrayed in this one, or simply to be introduced to the franchise. The adult can take this as an apt swing from the news channels and news papers that talk of similar war making day in and day out. €‹

Overall, it must be said that, despite these what-could-have-been niggles, X-Men: Days Of Future Past is a perfectly competent comic book movie that delivers the goods and admirably so. From its uniformly excellent cast (McAvoy is especially good) to John Ottmans brass-laden score, this is your favourite restaurant serving up your favourite meal on an attractive platter. Dont expect the world from the condiments and sauces and youll do just fine.

While it’s more dramatically diffuse than the reboot and lacks a definitive villain, the new film is shot through with a stirring reverence for the Marvel Comics characters and their universe. And it ups the stakes by threatening nothing less than the genocide of the mutant population, among them faces old and new. It’s hard to imagine fanboys having too much to grumble about here, as Singer has pulled together an ambitious, suspenseful screen chapter that secures a future for the franchise while facilitating continued reinvention. Audiences should sit tight through the end credits crawl for an enigmatic signoff scene that provides a taste of the next installment, X-Men: Apocalypse.
