ZERO DARK THIRTY MOVIE REVIEW

Ratings:4/5   Review By: Rajeev Masand  Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)

Chances are that youve read or watched several news reports about the killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad in May 2011. Zero Dark Thirty, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, not only shows us what might have actually happened that night, but also tells the complex and riveting tale of the almost decade-long hunt for bin Laden following the attacks of 9/11. The film, whose title means thirty minutes past midnight, is masterfully directed by a filmmaker who refuses to take any political stance, but nevertheless offers her viewers endless material to debate. Im going with four out of five for Kathryn Bigelows Zero Dark Thirty. This is no jingoistic flag-waving revenge saga, but a thought-provoking and realistic account of the dark side of the war on terror. Dont miss it!

Zero Dark Thirty doesnt tell you anything that you dont already know. The film begins with harrowing real-life recordings of 9/11 victims and then moves to the greatest manhunts of modern times the search for Osama Bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty is deeply disturbing. There are scenes here that you cant watch and yet you cant look away. This film is gripping and visceral, in ways that cant be explained but should be experienced. Im going with four stars.

Story: How one CIA agent tracked down Osama bin Laden and ended the largest manhunt in US history. Jessica Chastain deserves to win every award she’s nominated for this year. That’s how good her performance in the film is. However, overindulgence is what truly mars the effort. The film could’ve been much shorter. Clocking in at close to three hours, the film’s premise is based on a series of events that spanned close to a decade, but the suspense is built, almost in real time, on slow-burn. It gives you the feeling of being there ‘as it happens’. That’s not always something your audience wants. Note: You will not like this movie if scenes of torture and foul language disturb you.

Zero Dark Thirty is an action movie. Which is its own kind of awesome. Bigelow has always been a very solid action movie director, and this movie belongs more on the Point Break side of her filmography than to the Hurt Locker side. Which, to me personally, is a bit of a shame. Its very well performed, but this really is a template action movie. Not saying so is particularly irresponsible, and though its true most action movies arent held to that standard of accuracy, Bin Laden is no Lex Luthor. This was a film that needed more insight, more nuance, than it offered. That said, as an action movie it completely rocks. Just not as what it pretends to be. Its a wailing guitar-riff of a movie, with an incessantly climactic drummer. Shake your head to it good, but dont try and listen to the words.

Zero Dark Thirty is a well-made film in terms of production values. But apart from portraying the single-minded zeal of a CIA woman for the head of the perpetrator of one of the most horrific terror attacks in US history, the script offers little by way of subtext or commentary. Unfortunately, this film’s screenplay, written by journalist Mark Boal (who won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker, another collaboration with Bigelow), is not as suspenseful or captivating as the other. True, and the seemingly impossible quest to hunt down bin Laden, given his storied elusiveness and untold wealth, offers a sizeable challenge to the Americans, but Maya’s pathological absence of self-doubt makes everything all right in the end.
